event. In SA,at 8:30 pm,a lot of lights will be switched off to show
solidarity with other people all over the world, people who want to make
a difference.I'm posting this blog earlier than my usual posting to
afford you the opportunity to sign up if you haven't yet.I'm sure if you
google earth hour you will find the site to sign up.I have a suspicion
that 1.4 billion is perhaps 10% of the people who will take part in this
event, most people won't sign up for various reasons, but if you want to
stand up and be counted in,sign up.It will only make a stronger
statement that we as citizens of the world can and will unite.
Our beautiful planet earth...From outer space she is the blue planet, our
blue planet. Some call her Gaia. The one that sustains us,you and me and
everyone and every other living creature who share in her bounty. The
one, once we shed our bodies, our bodies return to to foster new life. She
has been taking a most serious beating for the last few centuries. Her
forest have been burned to ashes, slashed and burned. Her insides have
been taken out in unsustainable levels. Her oceans have been raped and
and plundered.Whole species have dissapeared. Her air has been turned
into poison, her rain that she has blessed us with been turned into acid
rain. Her rivers have been dammed up.I can continue in this vain, all the
unspeakable atrocities that have been committed, and all in the name of
progress. And she is angry. She is showing us more and more that she will
take us out if we carry on in this way.
We have forgotten that it is all sacred, that life is a privilige. And
what will we leave behind for our children and their children. How will
we explain to them that we just sat and watched all of this happen and
didn't do anything about it.What will I tell my daughter if she can't
swim in the river because it is full of pesticides and herbicides and
sewerage. She will ask me why and why I don't do anything about it.She is
sensitive and intuitive to the highest degree and sharper than any two
edged sword. She will know that any reason I give her is just an
excuse. And to say that that is just the way it is,do you think that will
work.I think you know the answer to that one.
When she sees a dead moth, she will ever so gently pick the moth
up,cradle it in her hands,take it outside,dig a shallow grave,bury the
body and place a flower on top.And in the sunlight I will see
a glistening tear running down her cheeks. And I will be sad with her,and
pay due respect to life and death and once again relearn what I once
knew as a child, that all life is sacred. That none is less insignificant
than the other, that we can't make and break as we please, that we are
ultimately accountable,everyone of us.
Outside, here on the dark ocean, blobs of bioluminiscence is lighting up
as we move past.In the skies,on the western horizon,Orion is on his
eternal quest to wound the Bull.Wonder if he ever considered the
consequences should the bull get angry and chase him down. But there they
are,in a status quo,in limbo.Down here on planet earth,the tide is
turning, the status quo is ending, the bull has been wounded. And man will
ultimately be faced with the full fury of Gaia, nature, call it what you
like,if we don't mend our ways and learn to live in harmony.Just who do
we think we are after all.
Do your bit for planet earth tomorrow, state your intention, show your
compassion. And who knows, just maybe there will be a brighter future for
our children,for our forests,our oceans,our fellow
inhabitants, ourselves. It is inevitable,it will happen and your
contribution will shine throughout eternity. All the darkness in the
world cannot hide the light of a single candle.Be that candle, the flame
that never dies.Because that is who and what you are,an eternal being
that can make a difference. It is your choice. And don't be afraid of the
darkness that will happen on Saturday night, the light inside of you will
shine brighter than ever.
Our position just after midnight UTC is 28*31'N/26*06'W.We are 543nm
from Madiera,going slow but steady.
I wish you a most interesting day today, and an even more interesting
night on Saturday.
Paul
